I actually think that the knobs on the steering wheel might meet what you’re looking for. They went with a very contextual approach to those, so while you’re driving and listing to music, they control the volume, and I’d imagine that they can also be configured for other purposes, such as the fan speed.

There are only 2, though, so I’m not sure they’ll be able to do everything that you want at all times, but they might bridge the gap more considerably than we think. It’s still early to say, and hey, new features are just a software update away. I think the car interface you’ll see in 2019 will be completely different from what I have here. They’ve already started rolling out updates.
