As a software designer, I’m enthralled because other car’s screens and interfaces are 10 years behind Tesla’s unless they’re using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. No car manufacturer seems to get the need to have parity with mobile and tablet touch experience like Tesla does. If I was an engineer I think I’d also look, as you suggest, at the difficult mechanical or hardware pieces.
I’ll start geeking out about Toyota when they stop making UI’s that look like this:
That being said, I do own and love my Toyota, so I’m not against them, I just think the big car companies just suck at UI design. There’s no excuse for it.
